Artificial intelligence (AI) has come a long way since the Dartmouth conference in 1956, where researchers first discussed the possibility of creating machines that can simulate human intelligence. Here are 12 major milestones in the development of AI:

  1. 1956: The Dartmouth conference is held, which is often considered the birthplace of AI. (Source: https://www.dartmouth.edu/~milton/reading_room/ai_history/dartmouth.html)
  2. 1966: The term “artificial intelligence” is coined by John McCarthy. (Source: https://www-formal.stanford.edu/jmc/history/dartmouth/dartmouth.html)
  3. 1969: The first chatbot, called ELIZA, is developed at MIT. (Source: https://www.cs.tufts.edu/comp/150GA/homeworks/hw1/eliza.html)
  4. 1973: The first expert system, called MYCIN, is developed at Stanford University. (Source: https://www.cs.cmu.edu/afs/cs.cmu.edu/project/ai-repository/ai/areas/expert/mycin/0.html)
  5. 1980: The first industrial robot, called the Unimate, is used in a factory setting. (Source: https://www.ieeeghn.org/wiki/index.php/Milestones:Unimate_Industrial_Robot)
  6. 1987: The first self-driving car is developed by Carnegie Mellon University. (Source: https://www.cmu.edu/news/stories/archives/2013/september/self-driving-car-25-years.html)
